AWAROA LODGE WINS NEW ZEALAND TOURISM AWARD FOR INNOVATION IN ECO-TOURISM
22 September 2005
An
integrated approach to waste management that pays dividends on the dining
table has won Awaroa Lodge in the Abel Tasman National Park the Innovation
in Eco-Tourism Award at the 2005 New Zealand Tourism Awards.
Described as an elegant and synergistic solution to the dual issues of
waste disposal and supply of premium fresh produce in a geographically
isolated location, the Lodge’s integrated Waste Management – Organic Garden
system reflects an unrelenting drive for sustainable tourism. Waste products
that were once transhipped by trailer and barge to landfill are now transformed
into organic compost to feed a thriving 750sqm organic garden – and ultimately
produce nutritious, creative cuisine in the lodge restaurant. This meticulously
researched and planned system has achieved significant savings in fuel,
labour and food costs and is instrumental to Awaroa Lodge’s emerging national
and international dining acclaim. Most importantly, it is part of an all-encompassing
commitment to protect and enhance the stunning natural environment in
which the Lodge is situated.
Originally built in 1991 on 19ha of private land surrounded by Abel Tasman
National Park, Awaroa Lodge was purchased in 2002 by a group of four New
Zealand families. They have subsequently invested in a major upgrade and
repositioning of the property, including redevelopment of 26 suites and
construction of a conference / weddings and special events facility, plus
restoration of a four-hectare wetland to its pre-European state.
Integral to the development is a partnership with the environment, which
creates a unique ambience for Awaroa’s guests.
Design and construction of facilities, environmental improvements, use
of eco-friendly products and systems such as low impact waste management,
recycling and solar water heating - coupled with innovative eco-business
practices, are all geared towards building a business that reflects and
enhances the natural beauty of the area and delivers an authentic New
Zealand experience over the long term.
“It’s an exciting journey,” said Mr James Wall, co-owner of
Awaroa Lodge.
“Balancing the demands of protecting the environment with those
of running a tourism business demands a true partnership between commerce
and nature. In New Zealand there is no other lodge of this size, in a
location like this, doing what we are. There is real sense that Awaroa
is setting new benchmarks / breaking new ground and our guests from throughout
the world are incredibly receptive to what they are able to experience
here.”
In 2004 Awaroa Lodge achieved Green
Globe 21 benchmarked status and 4-Star Hotel Qualmark, and was selected
as New Zealand’s Best Boutique Hotel in Best: A New Zealand Compendium
(2004).
Awaroa Lodge is open year round. Surrounded by Abel Tasman National Park
it offers a unique destination to celebrate special events, enjoy outdoor
activities on land and sea or simply relax in contemporary comfort and
style.
